Album Cover Projects

The final outcomes for these projects shown below became vinyl/album cover designs. These projects showcase designs that were researched in depth to produce typographic and image heavy outcomes.

  • In this brief, my course was given the task to research a sub genre within music. Being a fan of the genre, I was intrigued to look in to this category of music and find its origin. Lo-Fi standing for low fidelity translates to background noise, which was one of the first genre’s of music to be produced out of the studio. This was predominantly created on any equipment aspiring music producers could find. This DIY approach along with its Low Fidelity sounds is what inspired the design processes of this project.

With the research in mind, I wanted to create an outcome that had a hands on approach in certain areas. The large image in the centre of the cover was created by melting some repurposed plastic and spelling out the letters of the genre. In order to represent the idea of background noise, the checkered background and grid layout used in photoshop was kept in the design.

  • Here is another research lead project, where I focused my research on two jazz icons as well as the designs from the jazz scene at that time. I noticed bright colours were used in the majority of covers, paired with bold typographic element. I used simple shapes in the backdrop so the attention stayed on the foreground text and imagery.

The type face used was loud and playful much like the genre of music it was created for. The use of simplistic shapes and thick lines made it easy to read and related well with the other visuals. This posterised effect in the imagery was very prevalent in jazz’s album designs, so to pay homage to early designs this too was incorporated into my outcomes. The ink overlays are a subtle hint towards the artist troubled times, as both suffered from drug addictions and a tough childhood.

  • This was a quick commission from an up and coming electric music producer that goes by the name “Khepri”. In this design I created a potential logotype for the artist that sat underneath an enigmatic visual.
